An apprentice from Accrington and Rossendale College has received national recognition from the Institute of Carpenters for his craftsmanship creating an elliptical table for a family member as part of his final year projects.

Alongside the highly commended recognition, Luke Jackson won vouchers worth more than £300 from leading tool manufacturers to add to his own collection.

Luke’s work was submitted for the award by Robert Baldwin, Carpentry and Joinery Lecturer at the college.

After receiving his award, Luke shared: “It’s really good. I know I’ve succeeded, and it’s something that will stick with me for a long time. I’ll be able to talk about this for years to come.”

Grateful for the vouchers, he added, “I haven’t got any tools in mind yet, but when the time comes, I’ll pick something I like to help me develop my skills for a career in Carpentry.”

Christopher Morris, lecturer and assessor at the college, congratulated Luke saying: “This is a great achievement that shows how talented he is. Luke’s recognition will inspire others to embrace the craft of woodworking and follow in his footsteps.”

Alongside his commendation, Luke has also been invited to join the expanding Student Ambassadors Group, and his table will also be showcased in the March-April 2024 edition of the IOC’s Cutting Edge journal, shining a national spotlight on his talent.

Geoff Rhodes, President of the Institute of Carpenters, said: “We started the competition to celebrate the important role that student learners and apprentices have in terms of our industry and organisation and the competition goes from strength to strength.

“Luke stood out through his attitude, his skill of the craft, his appreciation of what he has learnt, and he also received a number of glowing tributes from the people he has worked with.”
