A seminar on the difficult subject of end-of-life care persuaded Alysha Starkie to take up a career working with seriously ill patients.

And so impressed were judges by that choice, and her academic and vocational progress, that they made Alysha Starkie, Nelson and Colne College’s Apprentice of the Year.

Now working in a Lancashire County Council care home, Alysha’s other commendable decision was to begin a career in caring – during the COVID pandemic.

Impressed with her compassion the home-made Alysha their end-of-life champion and her recent personalised care of a patient who passed, was greatly appreciated by their loved ones.

Alysha’s nominating tutor said: “Alysha was invited to a seminar on end-of-life and jumped at the chance to attend. She has used all the skills she learned on her placement and her progress is such that her employers have asked her to share her knowledge with peers across 16 care homes.”
