Accrington and Rossendale College gearing up to compete in Emerson and Renwick Soapbox Challenge

Soapbox challenge

Students and lecturers from Accrington and Rossendale College are gearing up to compete in Accrington’s inaugural Soapbox Challenge on Saturday 1stSeptember.

Two teams – And in 1stPlace from the Construction Department, as well as AccRoss Motor Engineering from the Motor Engineering Department– will, not only be going head to head, but will also be competing against numerous other teams who have entered so far including the Chicken Runteam from sponsors, Emerson and Renwick.

Novelty prizes such as ‘Best Soapbox Design’ and ‘Best Team Costume’ will be awarded. This, in addition to there being very little construction and desired technical/engineering knowledge minimal, makes the challenge something the whole family, including children, can enjoy. There are no limits as to how inventive and adventurous your soapbox can be.

There will also be an overall winner on the day – the team or person who completes the course in the quickest time. The team or person who wins will choose a registered charity for 50% of the registration fees to be donated to. In true champion style, there will be an outdoor podium on the day to present awards to winners at 4pm at Accrington and Rossendale College.

The Soapbox Challenge will take place on the same day as the Chocolate Festival at Accrington Town Hall and the Rally Challenge and Car Show – all events combined providing entertainment for all the family for the entire day.

Phil Burgess, Deputy Head of Construction and driver for the Motor Engineering Department team, commented:

“We’re just really looking forward to it! It’s giving the students something to get their heads into and focus on over the month – they’re excited to get stuck in, to then see their finished product, and are looking forward to it being tested on the Soapbox Challenge course. With it being held at the college we’re feeling a little bit of extra pressure to make sure we do the best we can – we also know there’s a second team applied from a different department so there’s a little light-hearted rivalry which is spurring on the students even more!”
