Accrington College Teaching Apprenticeship Peel Park

Year 5 pupils from Peel Park Primary School celebrated their bright futures with a graduation ceremony at Accrington and Rossendale College.

89 Peel Park Primary School children graduate from Accrington and Rossendale College’s Junior University

The event took place to congratulate the 89 year-5 pupils; who have taken part in a series of workshops at the college during the last term. The workshops were designed to highlight the huge variety of careers they can choose from. The children have been testing their skills at everything from cooking to CSI style investigations!

The ‘Higher Futures 4 U’ initiative aims to engage with primary school pupils through term-long career-based workshops, giving children the chance to view all of their talents, raise aspirations and demonstrate routes into careers they may not have considered before.

Charlotte Scheffmann, Assistant Principal at Accrington and Rossendale College said:

“Today has been wonderful for many reasons, leading the graduation ceremony for the pupils was a great honour. Our goal is always to raise aspirations for children; showing them just how many options are available is a brilliant way to do this. I was also looking forward to seeing Brandon, one of our previous students here who now works full time for the school. He is a brilliant example of the success our students are having. It is also great to see local primary schools engaging with us and opening doors for their children.”

Brandon Naisbitt, Teaching Assistant at Peel Park Primary School was excited to come back to the college, where he initially studied for a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Support Teaching and Learning in Schools.

“I have been really looking forward to coming back to visit the College since I completed my apprenticeship. Last time I was here I was studying whilst working and now I have a full-time job with the school. It’s been the best thing I’ve done; I had a placement at Peel Park during my apprenticeship and they ended up offering me a job!”

“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone, you’re studying and learning but also working and earning a wage. It is a great experience and I have had tonnes of support from Accrington College and Peel Park. Generally, during the apprenticeship, I would spend one day a week studying and the rest working. Coming here today in a professional capacity feels quite emotional!”
