Course Overview
As part of this special month to celebrate local History we are running an online version of our History Detectives course. Come and join us on this course to learn the skills you need to be able to investigate our local history. Detectives will share their discoveries with the rest of the group in the second week and look ahead to be able to use their new found skills for future stories they may explore by planning a local history project.
What will I learn?
By the end of the course learners will be able to:
Identify the key skills needed in investigating history
Recognise how we can find out about the past through different sources
Examine the ‘stories’ of local areas and people
Identify ways in which we can use sources to develop history
Find out and research their own family ‘stories
How will the course be assessed?
The course will be delivered online.
Online courses will be delivered on either Zoom or MS Teams and learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet. All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so that learners are able to interact with their teacher and peers during the course.
Learners will be sent the join details and links prior to the course. Both of these online platforms can be accessed via an app on a smart phone, tablet or iPad or alternatively via the relevant website: https://www.zoom.us or https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-teams/log-in
Learning activities for the course include:
Active listening and reflective discussion
Participation in individual and group/team tasks
Personal reflection and note taking
Links to recommended websites and apps will be given to aid independent learning
Materials and other information
Learners are encouraged to bring their own personal histories, research and knowledge to share and discuss with the group.
In order for the course to start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your course 5 – 10 minutes prior to the official start time.
For all courses, it would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course.

Verbal feedback during the session will outline learner progress, highlighting areas of success and development points.
Completion of assessment at the start and end of the course will enable learners to review their skills and knowledge, highlighting specific areas to focus on or for further develop.
