Course Overview

This session is intended to provide a basic understanding of dementia, how to support people with dementia and how objects can be used to trigger memories. It is suitable for members of staff, the public or volunteers who work in a care setting or for people who care for a person with dementia.

It may also be suitable for someone with early stage dementia who can independently express goals and record achievements and who can independently compose and write labels - but please discuss this with the tutor before enrolment.

An initial assessment form will be used to assess your starting point and personal goals. You will need basic literacy skills and may wish to take notes.

What will I learn?

In this session you will explore what dementia is and learn about the different types, along with some signs and symptoms. You will learn to recognise the daily challenges faced by those with dementia and begin to explore strategies to support someone with dementia.

The main strategy will focus on how to make a memory box or bag suitable for someone with dementia and identify items to go into it. You will focus on each item and identify how objects can spark memories. During this session you will also discuss the benefits of using objects to trigger memories and identify suitable communication methods.

This session will give you the strategies needed to begin to create your own memory box or bag after the session has finished.

For this session it will be useful if you have:

• photos or copies of photos

• small objects that represent something about your life

• Items with texture e.g. wool or material

• 2 pieces of paper or card, a pencil, felt tips, scissors

• A box (a shoe box would be suitable) or a cloth bag

You will be assessed by your tutor via verbal feedback as well as written feedback where necessary.
