Connect & Keep Learning: The Duchy of Lancashire 1185-1500

Learners will be introduced to the unique history of Lancashire as a Royal Duchy and County Palatinate.

Focusing on the creation of the County, its early royal connections and the creation of the Duchy as a royal duchy and county palatinate. Historical disputes, it’s demise and revival are all fascinating aspects of this historical period.

Learners will also reflect on the benefits ‘connecting’ with others and ‘keeping learning’ can bring to your mental health and wellbeing.

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

· Identify the key developments of Lancashire as a county

· Explore why Lancashire became a royal duchy and a county palatinate

· Examine why the Duchy became the centre of national events

· Identify the demise of the Duchy in the 16th and 17th centuries

· Recognise the revival of the Duchy to 1900

· State the 5 Ways to Wellbeing and reflect on the benefits of ‘Connect’ and ‘Keep Learning’

The course will be delivered at either a community venues, or online - please check details when enrolling.

Online courses will be delivered on either Zoom or MS Teams and learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet.   All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so that learners are able to interact with their teacher and peers during the course.   

Learners will be sent the join details and links prior to the course. Learners are encouraged to bring their own personal histories, research and knowledge of the period and the topic to share and discuss with the group.

In order for the course to start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your course 5 – 10 minutes prior to the official start time.

For all courses, it would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course.
