Course Overview

Focusing on an area of Manchester known as Angel Meadow; which once considered to be the worst slum in Europe, learners will explore social conditions for working people; their work, entertainment, homes,
education, immigration and employment that affected their lives. Using timelines, maps, pictures and personal accounts, learners will investigate the time.

Learners will also reflect on the benefits ‘connecting’ with others and ‘keeping learning’ can bring to your mental health and wellbeing.

What will I learn?

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

· Recognise the development of Angel Meadow

· Examine how the area changed due to industrial development and immigration

· Review the living and working conditions in the area and their impact

· Identify key events such as the cholera outbreak, the immigration of the Irish in the 1840s and the

development of criminal gangs

· Discuss the attempts to reform the area

· State the 5 Ways to Wellbeing and reflect on the benefits of ‘Connect’ and ‘Keep Learning’

How will the course be assessed?

The course will be delivered at either a community venues, or online - please check details when enrolling.

Online courses will be delivered on either Zoom or MS Teams and learners will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet device with access to the internet.   All devices should have a camera, sound and a microphone so that learners are able to interact with their teacher and peers during the course.   

Learners will be sent the join details and links prior to the course. Both of these online platforms can be accessed via an app on a smart phone, tablet or iPad or alternatively via the relevant website: https://www.zoom.us or https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-teams/log-in Learning activities for the course include: · Active listening and reflective discussion   · Participation in individual and group/team tasks · Personal reflection and note taking · Links to recommended websites and apps will be given to aid independent learning

Materials and other information

Learners are encouraged to bring their own personal histories, research and knowledge of the period and the topic to share and discuss with the group.

In order for the course to start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your course 5 – 10 minutes prior to the official start time.

For all courses, it would be useful to have a pen and paper so you can make notes throughout the course.
