Appointment of Governors

Independent Members are appointed to the Corporation Board by a decision of the full Board, following a recommendation by the Search and Governance Committee.

The procedures used by the Search  and Governance Committee to recommend appointments have changed since January 2008. Following a revision of the Instrument and Articles of Government external members had to be selected from particular categories of background, for example business and community organisations, and some governors were nominated by, for example, Local Authorities. The new Instrument and Articles removed these restrictions.

The Search Committee maintains a register of persons who have expressed an interest in becoming an Independent Board Member. It does this by advertising for expressions of interest and using various networks to attract potential members with specific skills.

Potential Board members are asked to come into College to find out about the work it does, tour the campus and meet with the Principal and/ or the Chair of the Corporation Board to discuss what they can offer the Board and College in terms of skills and commitment.

When a vacancy occurs for an Independent member, the Search and Governance Committee meets to decide what skills and experience will strengthen the Board and identifies from the potential members individuals with those skills. After due consideration the Committee recommends an appointment to the Board. In making its recommendations the Committee attempts to make the Board reflect our local communities in terms of gender, ethnicity and age, and also the wide geographical spread of the communities served by the College.

The procedures for appointing staff and student governors differ from that for external Independent Members. Staff Members are elected by College staff. Student Members are recruited through respective FE and HE Student Councils (1 student member from each).

The Board welcomes approaches from persons interested in becoming a member. If you are interested in helping the college in this way please contact:
